Belgrave Road shopping area is little out of the city centre, but well worth a visit. Many buses go to this area from Belgrave Gate.
Known locally as "The Golden Mile", this is the centre of the Asian community and displays of Indian culture abound in almost every shop window. Gold jewellery, fabulous silks, delicious sweetmeats and savouries are everywhere, and the shops like Saree Mandir, have a national reputation.
Leicester happen to have some of the best Asian shopping this side of the Punjab on Belgrave Road. Belgrave Road also happens to be cheaper than the high street. There are also the designer shops on Belgrave, so it's not all cheap, the wedding clothing can be astronomical prices. However, for the sheer beauty of the garments, many are willing to pay the price.
And while you're on Belgrave Road, don't forget to check out the other shops. There are cash and carries that stock everything from Usted Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan CDs to religious icons to kitchen wear to henna. There are also jewellery shops that stock the most fabulous 24 carat gold. There are also delectable restaurants that can quench your thirst and fill your belly after a hard day shopping.
